Falmouth's International Sea Shanty Festival 2020 has been cancelled
A unanimous decision has been made by the organisers of Falmouth’s International Sea Shanty Festival to announce that this year’s event, due to take place from the 12th – 14th June has been cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.
A good deal of time, energy and planning has gone into this years’ event and the shanty committee cannot give enough thanks to the venues, groups, sponsors, suppliers and shanty fans for their participation in the organising up to this point.
Performances were planned for over 70 groups across 25 venues. All groups and venues will be pencilled in for next year’s festival as plans for 2021 get underway for the 11th – 13th June.
SAVE THE DATES!
The dates for the 2021 Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival are 11th - 13th June.
Welcome to one of the largest free nautical music and song festivals anywhere!
Over 65 groups from all over the UK as well as from Brittany, Holland, Spain, Canada and Ireland perform their unique take on sea songs and shanties at over 20 very different venues throughout the town. From cosy pubs to professionally engineered main stages, street corners to parish churches we have them all!
Falmouth has a proud and very long history as a first safe port of call for deepwater sailing ships with their weary crews often having been at sea for many months. It was here that they filled our waterside alehouses with their songs and yarns and it is here that those shanties and stories are kept alive to this day. Many of the pubs and clubs that refreshed those Cape Horners and Clippermen remain. If you listen very carefully as you walk along our seventeenth-century quays you can still hear them singing!
We sincerely hope you can enjoy as much of our festival as possible. We are confident that you will have a memorable weekend.
We look forward to seeing you!
